Late Fee

License renewals must be received by MARRT by January 15. Effective January 16 and onward, a Late Fee will be applied to all renewals for the purpose of ensuring any issues that may have been encountered during the process can be rectified in time for the renewal to be completed and approved before the January 31 final deadline and the registrant being unable to practice.  In addition to a Late Fee and potential Reinstatement Fee (if you did not renew before February 1), you will be required to participate in the Continuing Competency Program Audit scheduled in March of that year.

Reinstatement Fee

A Reinstatement Fee will be assessed on renewals received after the January 31 final deadline at which time the registrant’s license to practice has lapsed and they can no longer practice without applying to have their license reinstated. The Reinstatement Fee will also be applied when registrants return from a declared leave and the license was not renewed during the annual renewal period. In this case, the Late Fee will not be charged. Please refer to L-03 License Categories / Fee Schedule policy.

Additional Licensure Information

Please note that MARRT prorates license fees on a quarterly basis to individuals applying for license throughout the year. The quarterly increments are: February 1 to April 31; May 1 to July 31; August 1 to October 31; and November 1 to January 31. MARRT does not provide rebates on license fees for those no longer practicing through the year.

Maintaining Current Checks

  • Criminal Record Check (CRC)
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
  • Adult Abuse Registry Check (AARC)
  • Child Abuse Registry Check (CARC)

The 2022 licensing year marked the beginning of the new requirement that all respiratory therapists registered with the MARRT were required to have a current Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check on file. These checks are valid for five years from the completed date noted on the Criminal Record Check and this date applies to all four checks. Once the Criminal Record Check expires, all other checks will be considered as expired. For reference, the expiry date is recorded in the profile of each MARRT registrant in the Active Practicing, Self-Disclosure section.

Jurisprudence Module – Health Equity and Cultural Humility

Effective December 1, 2022, the completion of this module is a requirement for your license renewal and approval. The module will take approximately 45 minutes to complete and includes information, a section on matching terms with definitions, and ten multiple choice questions. It is not a pass/fail module. Upon completion of the module, please complete the certificate that is part of the module and print the certificate to be uploaded to your profile. You must complete this step to demonstrate you have completed the module, which is a requirement of your license renewal.

Professional Liability Insurance

All MARRT registrants are required to have Professional Liability Insurance independent of their employer. This requirement allows for protection of the public in the event that compensation to the public is required as part of a claim. The minimum Professional Liability Insurance required by a member is $5,000,000 per claim and or $10,000,000 aggregate per year.  Please note, if you are required to participate in the Continuing Competency Program Audit scheduled in March of each year, you will need to provide a receipt showing payment of the PLI and a copy of a certificate for the insurance plan purchased.
